About
Season Launch 2023
6pm-8.30pm
Join us for a warm and welcoming event at Dance City, celebrating the launch of our spring/summer 2023 season.
The evening includes Artistic Director’s welcome, highlights exciting new shows from our upcoming season, and offers a unique opportunity to see a special 60-minute Preview Performance of new music production Nine Songs in our Theatre.
This new piece is being developed in residency at Dance City by Dance producer, Farooq Chaudhry, best known for his productions with Akram Khan, English National Ballet and Yang Liping.
Nine Songs belongs to the Verses of Chu, the second oldest poetry anthology from 300 B.C. In ancient times these poems were created to be performed with music and dance at the cusp of seasonal transitions, to serve as potent meditations for human beings and the deities of the natural world. Nine Songs is a nostalgic personal reflection at the threshold between the by gone Age of Mythology and the imminent Age of Reason.
Click below to book your free ticket. Nibbles and drinks will be available, and you can also enjoy an extra 10% off any performance tickets booked on the night.
Dance City is one of Newcastle City Council’s designated Winter Wellbeing Hubs, please help us to make a difference by finding out more and donating, https://www.dancecity.co.uk/about-us/support-donate/, or contributing to our cash collection on the evening.
The performance of Nine Songs includes costume, set design and movement. On the back of a world premiere in the desert of Alula, where it received global critical acclaim, this deeply moving production is being adapted for indoor theatres at Dance City after which it will embark on a global tour.
Singer - Rui Fu
Violin - Preetha Narayanan
Chinese Guqin - Xiaogang Zeng
Chinese Dulcimer - Chao Tian
Percussion - Joji Hirota
Celtic Harp - Ruth Wall.
Music Director - Jocelyn Pook
Lighting Designer - Fabiana Piccioli
