Kontemporary Korea is a showcase of two of the freshest new voices in K-dance, each finding inspiration and play in the balance between the mundane and the virtuosic.

Dance City is thrilled to announce its participation in the much-anticipated Festival of Korean Dance in 2025, presenting groundbreaking contemporary dance performances that bring together a diverse array of exceptional South Korean companies. Running from May 7th to May 24th, the festival promises to be a captivating celebration of movement, music, and culture, with performances taking place at Dance City, alongside venues such as The Place, Pavilion Dance South West, and Lowry.

This year’s festival marks the eighth edition of the event, featuring a powerful lineup of five leading South Korean companies, including the internationally acclaimed Korea National Contemporary Dance Company (KNCDC). Dance City is excited to host “0g (zero grams)” by the Melancholy Dance Company, alongside “A Complementary Set_Disappearing with an Impact” by Choi x Kang Project, in two performances on May 15th.

The festival kicks off at The Place on May 7th with Jungle by the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, a raw and powerful spectacle that embodies the vitality of the jungle, with a 17-strong ensemble of dancers exploring themes of survival through instinctive and expansive movement. Following its highly praised performances across Europe, Jungle makes its UK debut at the festival.

On 15 May Dance City will welcome Melancholy Dance’s “0g (zero grams)”, which delves into the paradox of daily routines through dynamic, gravity-defying choreography inspired by the mythical figure Sisyphus. Through free-fall movement and virtuosic acrobatics, the dancers experiment with the boundaries of the body’s limits, capturing the audience’s attention with their raw physicality. This powerful piece is followed by Choi x Kang Project’s “A Complementary Set_Disappearing with an Impact”, which brings an innovative fusion of video and live performance. The work explores the intersection of different dimensions, challenging perceptions and offering a thought-provoking narrative.

Christina Elliot, Head of Programming and Producing at The Place, reflects on the festival’s significance: “This year’s festival showcases the depth of contemporary choreography in Korea. Each of the artists is engaged in a deep investigation into the human condition, inviting audiences to experience new perspectives on the world.”

At Dance City, we are proud to offer our audiences a chance to engage with some of the most innovative and thought-provoking works in the world of contemporary dance. From gravity-defying movements to multimedia explorations of identity and perception, A Festival of Korean Dance offers something truly unique and unforgettable.
