---|---|---|---|
Starting life just across the road from our current location, the original three studio Dance City was opened as a base for English Dance Theatre. The North East was an early leader in dance development and became one of the first National Dance Agencies in 1989. The organisation has always celebrated dance for everyone in every form with public classes, activity in the community, professional development and the presentation of an international programme of dance performance.
Since 1991 Dance City has worked with education partners to offer full time professional dance training in the North East. Today this programme is stronger than ever with BTEC, BA and MA courses on offer. In 2005 the new bespoke Dance City building opened on Temple Street with five studios and a 250 seat specialist dance theatre. Today our building is full of students, members of the community dancing, professional dancers and welcomes touring dance companies from around the world. The programme of 60+ public classes each week is well supported with more than 45,000 attendances each year. As the dance agency for the North East we have always worked across the region. Today more than 8000 people a year through our engagement activity that reaches and inspires people many who have never danced before. There are so many achievements to be proud of but we never rest on our mission to lead and support a thriving dance ecology in the North East of England and look forward to announcing exciting new developments throughout our celebration year.If you’ve been with us on the journey so far then thank you, if you’re new to Dance City then welcome. Come celebrate with us in 2016. Anthony Baker |
