About
Join us for a celebration of Samba
The beautiful costumes… the pounding of the drums… the fast footwork and passion… Samba is the heartbeat of Brazil and it is its rich and powerful history that makes it all the more significant in modern day Brazil. Samba = community!
Today there are many styles of Samba music and dance but one of the most recognisable dance styles is ‘Samba no Pé’– a solo dance performed by ’Passistas’ (Samba Dancers) which literally translates as ‘Samba on the feet’.
Samba no Pé is high energy, big, bold and all about showcasing your skill and developed confidence!
During this workshop you will be taken through a brief history of Samba, learn the basic ‘Samba no Pé step and fully immerse yourself in this high energy dance, straight from the amazing carnivals of Brazil!
We will look at where Samba came from and its significance in Brazilian culture today, learn some basic steps and work towards a short routine to perform at the end of the workshop.
About the teacher
Alé has been dancing Samba no Pé since 2018 and is a Passista with Capela do Samba in Leeds. Over the last 5 years she has performed at multiple festivals, events and as part of many Parades across the UK alongside various Samba Schools and bands.
In 2020, Alé travelled to Rio de Janeiro to experience the joy of Carnival and fell even more in love with the art and power of Samba. Whilst in Brazil, Alé attended Samba no Pé dance workshops, including a session with world renowned Samba dancer Carlinhos Salgueiro and has continued to perfect her technique by attending regular workshops across the UK.
Alé is so excited to finally be bringing a taste of Carnival to the North East and her weekly classes will focus on body confidence, embracing the history and significance of Samba, sharing positivity and perfecting those basic Samba steps.
What to wear
Keep it comfortable! Samba no Pé is a high energy and cardio based dance and therefore, you will want to be able to move freely in whatever you wear. Please wear trainers and be sure to bring water. Do not worry... bikinis are not required (although feel free to wear sparkles if you feel like it!)
