Pilates is a system of exercises and movements designed to improve physical strength, flexibility and posture and to enhance mental awareness. Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way with a particular emphasis on the core to improve general fitness and wellbeing.
This low impact, adaptable class is suitable for all ages and fitness levels and can perfectly complement your fitness regime.
- It improves flexibility
Pilates utilises movement and breathing to work towards a safe increase in length and stretch of the muscles and improve mobility in the joints.
- It strengthens your core
Our core muscles include the back, abdomen and pelvic floor and are essential to support efficient movement patterns. A strong core supports the frame and allows the neck and shoulders to relax.
- It improves balance and posture
Good posture is a reflection of good alignment supported by a strong core. It is a position from which one can move freely. Pilates trains the body to express itself with strength and harmony.
- It enhances muscular control
Pilates movements are designed to isolate and each intricate muscle group that we often overlook in our day to day lives, this practice increases our awareness of our bodies and allows us to effectively control our muscles.
- It promotes stress management and relaxation
The low intensity and focus on controlled breathing and alignment of Pilates can contribute to the relief of stress and promote mindfulness that can be applied to life outside of the studio.
- It supports the rehabilitation and prevention of injuries
As detailed above, Pilates helps improve flexibility, increases strength and improves balance. These factors reduce your risk of injury. Pilates also provides body awareness, thereby reducing stress on joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments.
- It supports your other training
For elite athletes, including dancers, Pilates can complement training by developing whole-body strength and flexibility, and help reduce the risk of injury.
