Freedom City ‘Path to Power’ was an opportunity to link with a citywide programme across Newcastle marking the 50th anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. receiving an honorary degree from Newcastle University.
The goal was to bring Dr King’s legacy to life for a new generation to equip them with knowledge and skills and empower them to contribute towards tackling the great problems of war, poverty and racism. Dance City were commissioned by Northern Roots to produce a dance outreach project with young people of Newcastle.
We worked in five schools and a community group each week for 6 sessions to develop new pieces of dance on these themes. The pieces were linked together using recordings of the speech to create a powerful and moving performance on the Dance City stage.
