Advanced Training Programme

The Dance City Advanced Training Programme (ATP) is an intensive dance training programme open to students between 12-17 years of age from across the North East of England that show an exceptional talent and potential in dance.

We are part of a national network of organisations delivering non-residential dance training and performance opportunities as well as the chance to work with leading dance companies and artists. We do not necessarily look for students with formal experience, but with enthusiasm, potential and a desire to explore dance as a possible career.

The core curriculum is based around three weekly classes totalling eight hours per week, as well as intensive Easter, summer and half term training programmes. Students will study contemporary and classical technique as well as body conditioning classes.

In addition to technique, students undergo a wide range of activities, classes and workshops to extend their movement experience. These take the form of movement/performance skills classes, repertoire classes, creative classes and choreography. Students will have opportunities to see leading dance companies and artists, and take part in regular performances.

The ATP is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and financial support is available to cover the cost of tuition by a system of means testing based on family income.

The Audition Process

There are two stages to the ATP audition process. All applicants will attend a First Stage Audition which will consist of a short ballet class, a short contemporary technique class and a creative class.

Applicants who are successful at the First Stage Audition, will be invited to a Second Stage Audition where they will take part in a further contemporary technique class, creative session and interview. Applicants who successfully complete both stages of the audition process will then be screened by our physiotherapist.

What Should I Wear?

When taking part in the auditions, applicants should wear the following:

Females: Leotards, tights, ballet shoes or bare feet.                                                                                        Males: Shorts, tight t-shirts or leotards, ballet shoes or bare feet.

If you do not have any dancewear, then leggings and a tight t-shirt/sports vest will be suitable for males or females. Loose, baggy costume is not appropriate, as we need to see body line and muscle tone.
